U2 Star In A New Doc, But Here Are The All-Access Passes We Really Want

Posted by MTV News On July - 27 - 2011

U2

By Matt Goodhue

U2 has sold millions of records, packed enormous stadiums and won an array of awards for their musical achievements. Now, the legendary Irish rock band can check one more accomplishment off their to-do list: open a film festival with their incredible story.

Davis Guggenheim, director of the U2 documentary "From the Sky Down," will premiere his film as the opener for the Toronto Film Festival in September. "U2 has defied the gravitational pull towards destruction," Guggenheim says, "this band has endured and thrived." The film, chronicling the rocker's talent and dedication to music, asks the question why.

While festival-goers will catch the band behind the scenes and off stage, we've begun to think of other bands and artists we'd be interested in seeing when the spotlight is off. Some come to mind because of their genius work and success, others because of the crazy lifestyle that we all want to see.

Kanye West
From spitting through the wire to his VMA antics with Taylor Swift, Kanye West is one artist who certainly lives an eccentric life. The Chicago rapper is constantly cranking out hits and sporting some swagged-out fashion, and I'm totally intrigued to see where his inspiration comes from. I wouldn't mind seeing him and Jay-Z collaborate and chill in the studio either. They both seem like some real cool dudes.

The Strokes
After not releasing an album for about 5 years, there must be some interesting story behind the bands on- and off-again status. Yet, the group still manages to produce some of the best rock music of our era. These New York City musicians seem like they couldn't care less about how they're received, which make them good candidates for the title of most badass band in the US. They must have some killer backstage parties, too.

Wiz Khalifa
Between all of the paper planes and champagne that is tossed around, I would be amazed to see when Wiz finds time to grab the mic and go in on a track. This dude seems like he is having the most fun of any other artist out there, and it's crazy to note how much he's evolved and succeeded this year alone. I'm sure this documentary would be filled with the raspy laugh and smoke that all his Taylors have come to know and love.

Odd Future
From Tyler, the Creator's Twitter feed alone, you can tell the guys in OFWGKTA take no shame in making sure they're having fun. I envision this documentary to be a mix of “Jackass” and a horror movie. To make things better, Tyler could just direct the whole thing himself (check out his nomination for Video of the Year at this year's VMAs!). First a VMA, maybe next an Oscar?

Which artists would you like see behind the scenes?

Coachella Dilemmas: Odd Future Vs. Cee Lo; Duran Duran Vs. The National

Posted by MTV News On April - 13 - 2011

By Zack Swickey

The schedule for this weekend's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has at last been revealed, and in typical music-fest fashion, it is forcing fans to make heart-wrenching decisions. Anyone that has ventured to a major music festival, especially one of Coachella's magnitude, knows that they will inevitably have to choose between, not one or two, but up to four or five of the newest wave of indie bands and veteran acts playing simultaneously.

Friday is going to be hardest day for the music elitists sweating in the California sun. If you want to check out the latest rap crew the music world is buzzing about, Odd Future, you will have to sacrifice seeing foul-mouthed Cee Lo and art-rock outfit Warpaint. And what would make a wicked indie-rock bill on its own is instead a touch dilemma: Noise-rock duo Sleigh Bells perform at the same time as vets Interpol and Cold War Kids. Fans of the Killers have the choice to see Brandon Flowers solo, or they can check out the finest of blues rock: the Black Keys. If you want to forgo main-stage favorites Kings of Leon, you can treat yourself to frenetic, electronic rock duo Crystal Castles. Beer guzzlers will most likely watch Flogging Molly close Friday night, while the more, shall we say, "experimental" fans will flock to see legendary electronic outfit the Chemical Brothers.

Thankfully, Saturday and Sunday are much lighter on conflicts. On Saturday, depending on how much you like your ears ringing, you are tasked with the following option: the folk charm of Mumford and Sons or the seldom-seen dirty, synth-rock of One Day as a Lion, which features Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha and ex-Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore. Animal Collective battle it out with the Swell Season. Unless you're a big fan of the DJ scene or a disco-loving Scissor Sisters die-hard, you will check Arcade Fire closing things down on Saturday.

Sunday has a lot of solid acts lined up, but the set times are better laid out (at least for my own musical palate). Rap's latest superstar, Wiz Khalifa, and folk outfit City & Colour may not seem like two acts that will divide fans, but the choice would be tough for me. Iconic new-wave band Duran Duran face-off with recent MTV Woodies nominees the National at a surprisingly early time. The Strokes, Chromeo and Ratatat probably have a whole lot of fans in common who will be scurrying between stages, but they'll likely all come together at last when none other than Kanye West closes out the festival. If you were lucky enough to grab a ticket to the sold-out festival, good luck planning this all out. And come back this weekend for reports on which shows MTV News chose to check out at Coachella.

March Madness, Chris Brown And A Jaw-Dropping ‘American Idol’: This Week’s Deep Cuts

Posted by Kyle Anderson On March - 25 - 2011

Another busy week is in the book, and next week promises to be even more eventful, as there are a number of surprises in store that we can't talk about yet but are certain to keep you glued to your computer screen. In the meantime, you should spend this weekend watching more intense NCAA basketball action, standing in line to see "Sucker Punch," playing games of Cat-opoly or just thinking up awesome new fillings for burritos. Before you do all that, be sure to check out all of the great stuff you might have missed this week on the MTV Newsroom blog.

» MTV's Musical March Madness marches on, with second round voting running through the weekend and closing on Sunday night at midnight. Vote for all of your favorite artists here!

» Chris Brown had an interesting week that saw him release an excellent new album, throw a tantrum at "Good Morning America," lose a publicist and stop off for a quick game of basketball.

» "American Idol" also had a particularly nutty week, as the performance episode contained some of the season's best work and perhaps one of the best performances in the show's history.

» And then the next night, Casey Abrams found himself at the bottom of the voting heap only to later pick up the elusive judges' save.

» "The Celebrity Apprentice" continues to be one of the best shows on television, and the latest episode featured as much Gary Busey as anyone could handle.

» Jon "Bones" Jones won himself a light heavyweight championship and became the youngest ever UFC titleholder.

» Britney Spears revealed some interesting facts about herself you might not have known. The most surprising, according to the readers? She doesn't own a cell phone.

» Veteran rock journalist Neil Strauss talked about his extremely intimate conversations with the likes of Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love.

» The Strokes dropped their new album Angles, which was very well-received by the critics.

» Finally, "Jersey Shore" had its season finale, which means you have a few months to bone up on your Italian before the gang returns to the airwaves.

MTV’s Musical March Madness: The Strokes Vs. Phoenix

It's all about the fans, and the artist with the most passionate fan base will score the awesome Musical March Madness trophy!

The East region marches on with a pair of excellent indie rock favorites taking one another on for Sweet 16 berth. It promises to be a barnburner that should go down to the last day.

Voting for all second round match-ups will close on Sunday, March 27 at midnight. As always, you can follow all the voting here.

(4) The Strokes vs. (5) Phoenix
In the first round, the Strokes took out fellow New York indie darlings MGMT in a reasonably close race, while Phoenix delivered a surprisingly thorough beatdown of Phish (the Phish fans did not come together the way some prognosticators expected). Will the French genre-hoppers be able to upend the New York comeback kings (who may be getting a boost from their well-received new album Angles)? Only your votes know for sure.

Watch the breakdown of the first round and a preview of round two!
