Justin Bieber’s Chilean Fans Are Ready To Party

Posted by James Montgomery On October - 14 - 2011

We landed at the Aeropuerto de Santiago at 8 a.m., and already they were there: the squealing throngs of Justin Bieber‘s Chilean army. They were packed in tight against guardrails in the arrivals lounge, holding signs, waiting with bated breath for just a glimpse of JB, even though he had wrapped a pair of shows in Argentina less than 12 hours ago (and, as he would later reveal on Twitter, he wouldn’t arrive in Chile until six hours later).

Still, that didn’t stop them from eyeing each and every arriving passenger, searching them up and down for some semblance of Bieber. They were egged on by a local newscast playing on a TV in the corner, which showed JB no less than four times in 30 minutes and, in one particularly cruel move, actually deployed a Bieber look-alike on the streets of Santiago to further froth the frenzy. It was, in no uncertain terms, rather amazing to watch … the mania, the devotion, the excitement in the air. Make no mistake about it, Chile is ready for Justin Bieber.

Of course, unbeknownst to most, the Beebs’ crew was already on the ground, beginning the monumental task of building his stage over at the Estadio Nacional. An army of hundreds, each in green hard hats, lifted scaffolding into place and assembled a grid of plastic over the bright-green football pitch. Bieber’s tour manager watched intently, giving directions and talking loudly on his cell phone. Backstage, the bowels of the ancient stadium had been given a makeover, with white fabric draped over the concrete tunnels. Bieber’s dressing room (and his manager’s, and his dancers’, and his parents’) sat empty, covered in the same flowing fabrics, purple flowers dangling artfully in glass vaises. The calm before the storm.

Of course, outside the Estadio, that storm was already beginning to pick up steam. There were no less than 2 dozen Bieber fanatics camped by the entrance gate (and we mean, like, literally camped, with tents and everything), dutifully drawing handmade signs, singing Bieber songs, counting down the hours until Saturday night’s show.

Our primary reason for coming to Chile was to interview Bieber (and to premiere his brand-new “Mistletoe” video), and, make no mistake about it, that will happen (our crew spent most of the day scouting locations inside the Estadio). But within the past eight hours, we’ve also discovered a secondary reason for being here: namely, to witness firsthand just how massive Bieber’s worldwide following truly is, and, in a way, to rediscover what it means to truly be a fan … manically, devotedly so. Shoot, at this point, we can’t wait for Saturday either.

Catch the premiere of Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe” video Tuesday, October 18, at 7:54 p.m. on MTV, with a full interview to follow on Fans can submit their text and video questions for Bieber via Twitter, using the hashtag #AskBieber.

Florence And The Machine Hint At New Music Inspired By ‘Dark Metaphors’

Posted by Jocelyn Vena On May - 20 - 2011

Florence Welch displayed her Lungs on the Florence and the Machine album of the same name, which hit stores back in 2008. She found mainstream success in 2010 thanks to the track “Dog Days Are Over.” Now a household name and a fashion icon, Welch is opening up about the band’s follow-up album in Nylon magazine.

“A lot of the songs on the new album are about imaginary things, things that you can’t touch — ghosts and rumors, my dead grandmother, things visiting you in a dream,” Welch says in the magazine, hitting newsstands on May 31. “It’s almost like I am taking the Oscars and all those amazing events and turning them into something that brings you back to your reality. I was dressing up to go on stage from the beginning, but instead of a designer outfit, it would be a £2 cape from Oxfam or a lime green catsuit I borrowed off Andrew [VanWyngarden] from MGMT.”

(Check out exclusive photos of Florence Welch getting her fashion on in Nylon.)

Her producer Paul Epworth revealed that if Machineheads loved Lungs, they are in for a treat with this next album. “I think the last four tracks we did for the next album is some of my best work ever,” he said. “The new record is much more coherent. It’s more bombastic, kind of an Animal Collective, Kate Bush, super-heavy rock kind of thing. It could only be Florence. She’s found a new backdrop against which to set her tales of unrequited love and devils and Tim Burton-esque romantic stories. She’s more relaxed, more level. This time, it’s more about the battle between her head and her heart and that transition everyone goes through in their midtwenties, where you let go of the chaos of your youth. I think she’s ready to take on the world with this record.”

So, what is inspiring the flame-haired singer these days? “It still feels like I’m very much drawn to dark metaphors in the new songs,” Welch explained. “It always feels like as if with each song you write, you’re trying to understand something about yourself: Why am I this way? What’s wrong with me? It feels as if there’s still a lot of questioning left to do. Just because I’m happy in my relationship, I’ve still got issues to deal with. I’m going to be 25 and I feel like, well, I’ve got to be a grown-up now. I feel like your life is sort of always a battle between safety and freedom. You know: Do you want to throw yourself into something head first, or do you want to be cautious?”

Are you looking forward to the next Florence album? What do you think it will sound like?

Selena Gomez Channels 1920s For ‘When The Sun Goes Down’ Album Art

Posted by MTV News On May - 19 - 2011

By James Dinh

Selena Gomez is growing up and ready to show the world. Unlike previous teen-to-adult pop stars of the past, this Disney starlet isn’t making her transition to adulthood by sexing up her image, but instead taking a more subtle approach. Gomez took to her Facebook on Wednesday to show off a brand-new look with the artwork for her band’s new album, When the Sun Goes Down.

Stepping into a time machine, the “Wizards of Waverly Place” actress offers fans a retro, 1920’s get-up as she gazes into the distance. The MTV Newsroom is feeling Gomez’s new fashion makeover, but can’t help seeing the how the starlet’s cover art was influenced by photos of some “It” women from before her time.

Perhaps taking a page from triple-threat Josephine Baker’s classic snapshots, Gomez appears sprawled out on an ornate sofa for the LP’s cover. And when it comes to hair, the teen sensation rocks a flapper-like wig, much like the movie poster for “Lilac Time,” which starred silent film actress Colleen Moore. Gomez completes her look with a sparkling ensemble and matching feathered accessory and beaded headpiece. Kudos to Gomez’s graphic designers! They top the “When the Sun Goes Down” artwork with some old-fashioned-looking font and borders, paying homage to early cinema movie credit styling.

Selena Gomez and the Scene’s new album is set to hit stores on June 28, with “more mature” material than her previous efforts, including a song co-written by Britney Spears. Here’s hoping there’ll be some tunes inspired by the roaring 1920s!

What do you think of Selena’s new album cover? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Spotted: Snooki Lays The Smackdown In Preparation For WrestleMania

Posted by MTV News On March - 31 - 2011

Every day a multitude of stars wander through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with our intrepid correspondents. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that’s why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

As always, this year’s WrestleMania (the 27th the series, which makes it about the same age as the MTV Video Music Awards) features some guest appearances from a number of celebrities. Keri Hilson will be performing “America the Beautiful” at the event (which takes place this Sunday, April 3 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta), and one of the big matches on the card includes “Jersey Shore” star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi. She’ll team up with John Morrison and Trish Stratus (the trio are calling themselves the Brunette Mafia) to take on the team of Dolph Ziggler and LayCool in what should be a fun and interesting match. Snooki appeared in a “Brunette Mafia” T-shirt at the WrestleMania XXVII press conference in New York City on Wednesday (March 30), where she talked about the show, posed for the crowd and got her picture taken with the Rock and John Cena.

She wasn’t the only star taking care of business in New York City, as Duran Duran performed at the Paper Beautiful People Party and Norah Jones visited “The Late Show With David Letterman.” Click here for these photos as well as the entire “Spotted” archive, which features over 500 candid shots of stars like Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Eminem, Katy Perry, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, the Jonas Brothers, Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Madonna and Kanye West!

Spotted: Justin Bieber Takes Paris

Posted by MTV News On March - 30 - 2011

Every day a multitude of stars wander through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with our intrepid correspondents. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that’s why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

Even before he left the North American continent, Justin Bieber was already an international phenomenon (he comes from the wild foreign nation of Canada, after all). But he has truly blossomed into a worldwide superstar, as though he sings in English, his hooks, dance moves and hair all speak a universal language. The 17-year-old star is greeted as an icon just about everywhere he goes, and such was the case when he hit the streets of Paris this week before a series of concerts in France. Bieber was greeted by a massive throng of screaming French fans as he left his hotel to make his way to the Bercy Arena for yet another sold-out show. It’s all in a day’s work for Bieber, who always manages to play it cool like a pro twice his age.

He wasn’t the only star getting on stage, as Snoop Dogg popped up on “The Late Show With David Letterman” and Cee-Lo Green continued his tear across Europe with another funky fresh show at Shepherds Bush Empire in London. Click here for these photos as well as the entire “Spotted” archive, which features over 500 candid shots of stars like Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, the Jonas Brothers, Madonna and Kanye West!
