’10 Years Of Anjunabeats’: Behind The Music with Breakfast, Sunny Lax and Bart Claessen

Posted by Anjunabeats On February - 4 - 2011

Above & Beyond’s ‘10 Years of Anjunabeats’ celebrates not just a decade of the label’s existence but a decade of defining Anjunabeats moments. Giving you a deeper insight into this journey, our ‘Behind The Music’ series presents week-by-week interviews with the artists that make up the album – talking through the inspirations and effort that poured into their tracks and remixes. In our final edition, Breakfast runs us through his remix of ‘Northern Lights’ by Smith & Pledger , Sunny Lax reveals the story behind his classic ‘P.U.M.A.’ and Bart Claessen talks about taking on Super8 & Tab’s 'Helsinki Scorchin'.

Smith & Pledger – Northern Lights (Breakfast remix)
“For this remix I really wanted to capture a cold atmosphere, while still keeping these warm sounds in there. This remix has a lot of different elements that are chilly and reminded me of those cold Nordic winters, but still keeping an inner warmth to the overall feel.
“At first I had a lot of different options to work with after laying a few tracks down, but ultimately I wanted to keep the new "Breakfast" sound in there so I went back and took some of the elements from 'Every Night'. The original 'Northern Lights' was in B Minor, but I thought it sounded a lot better a whole step down - everything in my mix was tuned to A. This also allowed me to use the Prophet 5, which unfortunately is a very unstable machine, but the second oscillator seems to work a lot better in A minor.”
“The best part of Northern Lights is the slightly detuned sine-bell sound at the break - extremely euphoric leading up to the climax. I really love that sound, probably my favorite from any of the Smith & Pledger productions. The rolling bassline was also a big factor. This being a classic and all... I had to keep that in there.
“With the "Breakfast" elements combined with the original's smooth chords the finished product turned out to be a really beautiful remix that compliments the original in a sort of gentle "hats off" gesture.”
-Breakfast

Sunny Lax - P.U.M.A
“I usually don't show my tracks to anyone before they are finished, but I remember I got a telephone call from one of my friends when I just finished recording of main melody and played it to him down the phone – he said it was incredible so I knew I was on to something.
“After that I sent it to Anjunabeats, and the Above & Beyond guys were very keen about the track so they played it four times in a row in TATW! I always like to write tracks that will make people say ‘wow, that’s amazing’ even if they are listening 5 or even 10 years later. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes you don’t, but it is always the audience who decides what will be a classic.”
-Sunny Lax

Super8 & Tab – Helsinki Scorchin (Bart Claessen Remix)
“I have always liked the original, especially the way it works so well while it contains just a few sounds. Sometimes, definitely in this case, simple but good equals strong. That said, this makes it harder to remix. Especially when one of the main hooks of the track is not a big lead or something, but a nicely cut up vocal that floats instead of punches.
“I thought that a track like this needed a darker remix for an interesting contrast. I used that vocal and a slightly altered version of the original melody. And I blew up a small sample from the original track to arena proportions, which has maybe become the main hook of the remix. I'm very pleased with the results myself. I've played it live and the crowd response tells me this is one of those tracks that I'll be playing for a long time to come!"
-Bart Claessen

’10 Years Of Anjunabeats’: Behind The Music with Andy Moor, Daniel Kandi and Sunny Lax

Posted by Anjunabeats On January - 28 - 2011

Above & Beyond’s ‘10 Years of Anjunabeats’ celebrates not just a decade of the label’s existence but a decade of defining Anjunabeats moments. Giving you a deeper insight into this journey, our ‘Behind The Music’ series presents week-by-week interviews with the artists that make up the album – talking through the inspirations and effort that poured into their tracks and remixes. This week Andy Moor talks to us about the production intricacies behind his ‘These Shoulders’ remix, Daniel Kandi reveals the inspirations behind the classic ‘Breathe’ and Sunny Lax discusses his remix of Nitrous Oxide’s ‘North Pole’.

Signalrunners & Julie Thompson – These Shoulders (Andy Moor Remix)
“The main idea for this remix was to make it for the dancefloor, but also for the listener who has $1 headphones in their earholes – it’s hard to combine the two sometimes. There was a temptation to make it fast, driving and 'typical' but I thought that it deserved a little more subtlety in its delivery.
“The mix came together easily at first, and before I knew it I had too many parts and elements (as is lately becoming all too frequent) which soon meant I had to choose a direction. This was the hardest part. I had a really techie groovy version with no key changes and lots of production elements which would work great on the dancefloor but would equally alienate a lot of people, so I decided to halt that route and start on another.
“I also had a really messed up version where I spent days extending each of the vowels of the vocal to make it sound very fake and electronic and processed. I personally loved this, but then I thought "did I really need to do that when the vocal is so great on its own" so I scrapped that too. “Eventually I settled on the original vocal with subtle but suitable processing, a simple chopped vocal theme that accented the rhythm of the bass, a new chord sequence for the verse and a very layered string/pad section that complements the original chords and piano.
“As for the bassline, I’m really into rolling basslines at the moment but the original already had this kind of bass so I needed something new. I asked myself how I could create a bassline that would work in the chord changing areas and not get drowned out and lose its complexity. This is always the difficulty in creating a bassline that has an unorthodox rhythm and has melodic content - it has to work with every other sound otherwise it just sounds messy. Every other element has to be built around the bassline.
“In terms of structure - after the breakdown there was no question that there was an obligation to the original’s melody, so that had to be in there. The only question was should I copy off the original's more minimal "kick in" or should I try a full on "kick in". The more minimal idea did work very well but, as it’s a remix, I opted for an all singing all dancing 'kick back in' keeping the original's structure before the vocal chorus arrives again.”
-Andy Moor

Daniel Kandi – Breathe
“This was inspired after a night out with some Danish celebs. I came back to the studio and made a version when I was not in the most sober state. Then the morning after I feared the worst, but it sounded good! So I continued sober, and after few A&R talks with Jono, as well as some inspiration from the loss of a good friend, ‘Breathe’ was the result.
“With the sound of the track, I went for clear cut classic Anjunastyle, with a simple and yet beautiful chord progression. Most importantly I just hoped they would like it. Thankfully, the response was good. Forums were talking about who I was and where I was from etc... It was kinda fun to observe from the outside. I let the listeners decide if it’s a classic or not, but I do agree that that the melody instantly had a great feeling over it.
-Daniel Kandi

Nitrous Oxide - North Pole (Sunny Lax Remix)
“Remixing a 'timeless classic' is easy and difficult at the same time. In one sense, it’s easier remixing a track when you love the style of the original; this can be really inspiring. However, it is difficult, because it is always on your mind that you want to create something as good and likeable as the original.
“With ‘North Pole’ – which was always my personal favourite track of mine from Nitrous Oxide – I wanted to combine the uplifting feel of the old times in today's modern sound.
"The sound of the main leads and the simple but fabulous chord progression is what I really love in the original mix, so I tried to keep them. Instead of the big uplifting groove, I worked on something snappy but chunky. Although the remix is slower than the original, it is felt less, because there is a lot of swing on the rhythm. I hope you like it!”
-Sunny Lax

’10 Years Of Anjunabeats’: Behind The Music with Maor Levi, 7 Skies and Signalrunners

Posted by Anjunabeats On January - 21 - 2011

Above & Beyond’s ‘10 Years of Anjunabeats’ celebrates not just a decade of the label’s existence but also a decade of defining Anjunabeats moments, turning points, stories and passionately produced music. Giving you a deeper insight into this journey, our ‘Behind The Music’ series will be presenting week-by-week interviews with the artists that make up the album. This week we speak to Maor Levi, Signalrunners and 7 Skies.

Maor Levi – Reflect
“This track came together in a pretty random way. I just got back home after three hard weeks in the army and all I wanted to do was music. I was so tired and frustrated but I had a feeling something will come out of this specific weekend when I was at home...and it did. ‘Reflect’ was ready in three days and I was happy enough to take it on my mp3 back to my base and analyse the track on different headphones; I couldn’t wait to get back home and finish it off!
“Musically I was going for something new on the edge of progressive trance with a bit of house influences in there too. Most importantly I wanted something people will 'WOW' about when they hear it.
“It got a great response within Anjuna HQ, but I had no clue it would do so well until I saw it had been hitting compilations and had been chosen to be featured on Tiesto's ‘In Search of Sunrise 6’ which was amazing for me as a person who used to grow up on the ISOS series since the age of 12. Being a part of it was a feeling I can’t explain.”
-Maor Levi

Daniel Kandi – Breathe (7 Skies Remix)
“I wanted to produce something along the line of ‘Sushi’ with a very aggressive bass and catchy build-up that drops into the dreamy atmosphere of the original ‘Breathe’ mix. I have to admit this remix has been a tough one, it usually is when you are remixing a classic. You always have to be careful keeping what made the track so special in the past but at the same time you have to deliver something which is up-to-date, as well as something that sounds like your style.
“Anyway, the remix came together pretty quickly especially the build-up and the bassline sequence, the piano almost came by its own as I had those notes in my head since day one. The melody was initially different and simpler but turned out to be too laid down for the whole groove, so the obvious choice was to use the original one just a bit "swinged" to make it more bouncy.”
- 7 Skies

Signalrunners & Julie Thompson – These Shoulders
“I was in an Ear Training class at Berklee, and we were learning how to solfege in modal keys. That day we were focusing on the Phrygian mode, which inspired me to run home and write the main progression for the verses, and then later the chorus. Alan and I dreamt of having Julie Thompson do the vocals on the track, as the backing was practically written for her. After having the first 5 minutes of the backing produced, we contacted her, and to our surprise, she agreed! She wrote a beautiful song for it and absolutely nailed the vocal performance. The track really came together after she sent us back the vocal. It only took a couple of weeks to wrap the track, and the rest was history.” - Andrew Bayer
“We wanted to do something fresh and different, and also wanted to borrow from other genres, not just 'trance'. The arrangement of the original mix was a little different than the standard vocal trance tune. For one, it starts in D phrygian and ends in G minor, which is pretty unique for a trance record. The original mix also has a few different sections and bridges, which help give it a more traditional song writing structure.
“The response was huge at the time. It was one of those tracks that you either loved or hated. It was without a doubt our most popular single. We had no idea it would be regarded as a classic, but if it is, that's great and we're honoured!”
- Andrew Bayer & Alan Nimmo (Signalrunners)
