10 Years of Anjunabeats – Bart Claessen Interview

Posted by Anjunabeats On November - 30 - 2010

On Friday 3rd December, Anjunabeats will be celebrating a decade of ground-breaking releases with a '10 Years Of Anjunabeats' Xmas party at The Gallery @ Ministry Of Sound in London - uniting some of the best talent from both Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep. A limited supply of £10 discount tickets are available here: http://bit.ly/Anjuna10Years. Below is an exclusive interview with Bart Claessen to catch up before the event:

How did you relationship with Anjunabeats first develop? What was your first contact with the label?

Think it was end of 2006, when I was asked to remix Signalrunners' Aria Epica. Now, a few years later, I'm counting and noticing the 13th release (incl. remixes of course) is on the schedule already! About time I'm playing at one of those Anjuna events haha

What has been your favourite Anjunabeats release of all time? (and why?)

Probably Razorfish. Trance was still so fresh and new, there was vinyl, and a great tune of course.

Describe the last 12 months in 10 words...

I would really need a few extra hours of sleep.

Which track has stayed in your DJ sets the longest this year?

Apart from my own releases Elf, Hartseer and my Love Comes Again 2010 remix, probably "Rex Mundi - Opera Of Northern Ocean (Phynn remix)", or "Dada Life - Let's Get Bleeped Tonight (Tiësto remix)".

What is your best memory of playing The Gallery?

My first time in Turnmills, 2007. Can't get a better crowd than that.

Finally, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Enjoying a good wine in my New York penthouse, with my dog and two wifes. Wife and two dogs.

10 Years of Anjunabeats – James Grant Interview

Posted by Anjunabeats On November - 29 - 2010

On Friday 3rd December, Anjunabeats will be celebrating a decade of ground-breaking releases with a '10 Years Of Anjunabeats' Xmas party at The Gallery @ Ministry Of Sound in London - uniting some of the best talent from both Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep. A limited supply of £10 discount tickets are available here: http://bit.ly/Anjuna10Years. Below is an exclusive interview with Anjunadeep's head honcho James Grant to catch up before the event:

Hello sir, how has your week been?

Good thanks, just back from warming up for Above & Beyond at their Cape Town and Johannesburg shows.

First up it's the tenth birthday of Anjunabeats – which you run along with Above & Beyond. How did the label come about?

Jono and Paavo met at University and set the label up for their final year project, using their student loans. They pressed up some vinyls and doorstopped a few big DJs. Tony got involved shortly afterwards and together the three of them formed Above & Beyond.

What do you think the recipe for success has been?

We’ve put a lot of emphasis on quality control and have only ever signed music we love rather than just releasing stuff to make money.

You were also the brainchild of the sister label 'Anjunadeep.' What was the inspiration behind this?

The inspiration was the onset of middle age. I still like trance, especially the stuff A&B play, but as you get older you gravitate towards slower BPMs. Anjunadeep is essentially slowed down trance, the melodies are still there but the grooves are housier.

Are their often 'conflicts of interest' concerning the 'Anjuna' family, between your management and Djing duties?

Not really as my first priority is always everything Above & Beyond related and that takes precedence. I enjoy DJing but it’s not something I’m looking to do every weekend as it would affect the day job too much.

Your remix of 'Breaking Ties' with Jaytech is a favourite in The Gallery office! What software did you use to produce – was it difficult to keep the original emotion?

We used Ableton and cheated by keeping the musical genius of the original breakdown, just adding a more progressive groove.

Why did you choose specifically the Gallery @ Ministry for 10th anniversary celebrations?

Gallery hosted the first ever Anjunabeats party in London so it’s fitting they should host our 10th birthday. We also have a longstanding relationship with Ministry and it’s one of the best clubs in London for what we do.

What did you do on your 10th birthday?!

I’m a bit of a football fanatic so no doubt it involved a kickaround with friends, followed by a birthday tea featuring cheese and pineapple on sticks and a Hedgehog cake made by my mum. Expect similar things at Ministry on Dec 3rd.

Early plans for 2011?

Baby number two is due in Feb and my second Anjunadeep compilation (third in the series) is scheduled for the same month, so a bit of synchronicity there. But the biggest project for us all of us in 2011 is the new Above & Beyond artist album, called ‘Group Therapy’.

Finally, an Anjuna track name that best describes your forthcoming set?

A new Anjunadeep signing called “It Depends On You”, coz it won’t be much of a party unless you come along. Hopefully see you there.

When it comes to euphoric club trance, prolific Polish producer Nitrous Oxide is out there in a league of his own. The latest single from his debut artist album ‘Dreamcatcher’, ‘Downforce’ should already be well loved by trance fans and this three-track EP of resprays and remixes brings it bang up to date in fine style.
Injecting a surge of ripping, uplifting bass grooves into the mix, the new Nitrous Oxide Club mix then beds into the original’s familiar, striking piano breakdown before soaring off into a perfect combination of riff and groove.

Offering a smart contrast, his own Orient mix is built on a deeper lying but equally fat, funky groove with upbeat, instantly uplifting melodies working their way into the track.
Fresh from remixing another A-list Anjunabeats artist in Super8 & Tab, Mike Shiver then turns out another futuristic Garden State mix which blends a technical, groovy electro-prog build up with a sweeping musical breakdown.
